god of war: ghost of sparta

PSM3 Magazine stated that God of War III is “simply one of the best games of all time.” IGN Entertainment stated that it defines the word “scale” in relation to video games. The game has been highly praised for its graphics, especially those of Kratos (the game’s protagonist), with IGN stating the character “is perhaps the most impressive look ever seen in video games.” It has received several awards, including “Most Anticipated Video Game of 2010”, “Best PS3 Game”, “Best Graphics”, and Kratos receiving the “Biggest Badass” Award at the Spike Video Game Awards. The game was also honored with the “Artistic Achievement” award at the 2011 BAFTA Awards.

After killing the Sisters of Fate, Kratos uses his power to travel to the instant Zeus betrayed him and manages to avoid his death at the hands of the King of the Gods. Kratos and Zeus engage in a fight during which Athena ends up dead for protecting Zeus, revealing (Callisto, Kratos’ mother, had already revealed in Ghost Of Sparta) to Kratos that Zeus is his father. Kratos denies this and decides to finish with Olympus once and for all using the power of the Sisters of Destiny to travel back in time to the Great War where he manages to convince Gaia and the other Titans to attack Olympus taking advantage of the moment of weakness of the Gods.

Kratos is much more than one of PlayStation’s superstars: the ghost of Sparta has become, in his own right, one of the greatest standard-bearers of modern videogames and, since the most recent God of War, of the maturity and excellence that a videogame saga is capable of reaching. Which does not take away, on the other hand, how much fun it is to pulverize enemies dragged by anger. Especially those of disproportionate proportions.

At the end of the day, to talk about the star saga of the Santa Monica studio is to enter into a vendetta of Olympic proportions (never better said) in which our role is not reduced to cleaning each section of its exotic scenarios until we reach the next big boss, but how to bask in the feeling of revenge and barbarism to the fullest.

Logically, not all the installments have managed to transmit these experiences with the same excellence. In other words: the impact left by the original God of War on PS2 is unquestionable, but the way in which they have wanted to replicate that formula in each new main entry and parallel stories has not always been in-crescendo. Which does not detract from the fact that all God of War games have ended up being must-sees.
