The Special Air Service, better known by its acronym SAS, is an army corps of special forces of the British Army. Formed by three regiments, its functions in wartime are special operations, and in peacetime, mainly counter-terrorism, founded by Lieutenant Colonel Archibald David Stirling together with Major Robert Blair Mayne of Ireland and Lieutenant Jock Lewes of British India.
Together with the Special Boat Service (SBS), the Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR) and, from 2006, the Special Forces Support Group (SFSG), they make up the United Kingdom Special Forces (UKSF).
Although the SAS has its origins in World War II, it became known outside the military as one of the world’s most respected elite units following the successful Operation Nimrod in 1980, when they armedly stormed the Iranian Embassy in London to rescue hostages.[10] The SAS is made up of three regiments of the UKSF.
The SAS consists of three regiments, one with personnel drawn from the regular army, the 22 Special Air Service Regiment (22 SAS), and two from the Territorial Army (TA), the British Army’s reserve force, the 21 (Rifle Artists) Special Air Service Regiment (21 SAS(R)) and the 23 Special Air Service Regiment (23 SAS(R)).

Rather than Special Forces units per se, the two new regiments provide support for Special Forces missions. The Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR), created in 2005 to provide support to the SAS,[5] and consisting of some 700 men and women,[6] can be considered a special intelligence and surveillance force,[3] as part of its strength is drawn from the 14th Intelligence Detachment (known as “Det”), which conducted covert operations in Northern Ireland.[4] The Special Forces Support Group (SFSG), formed in 2006, mainly from the 14th Intelligence Detachment (known as “Det”), which conducted covert operations in Northern Ireland, can be considered a Special Forces Support Group (SFSG).
For its part, the Special Forces Support Group (SFSG), formed in 2006, mainly from the 1st Battalion, Parachute Regiment (1 PARA)[4] and, to a lesser extent, with personnel from the Royal Marines and the Royal Air Force Regiment.[7] Quartered in St Athan, Wales, it provides additional support, such as cordoning off or securing an area before an SAS or SBS mission.[4] In March 1995, a news report transmitted to the media in the United Kingdom, in which it was reported that the SFSG was formed in March 1995.
In March 1995, a news item broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and published in the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror newspapers[8] reported that the Director Special Forces (DSF) and his three bodyguards, all SAS and all in plain clothes, had been stopped at a checkpoint and had their weapons, computers and documentation taken, along with their Range Rover.[9][10][9][10
